ARTIST STATEMENT
My current collage medium is photo collage, which is the assemblage of printed images arranged to tell a narrative, to provoke thought, or to please the eye. The elements in my work are typically arranged to form something resembling a human body or to embellish a human body, sometimes in an atmosphere and sometimes alone. My interest in the human body serves as a platform for me to tell stories that are both compelling and whimsical. I want the viewer to be curious about the story and have an amused response to the imagery.
I cut from magazines and random printed material. Cutting is a meditative practice for me. When an image strikes me, I will use it to form the basis of a visual story, adding and subtracting complementary elements. My aesthetic tools are depth of space, texture and color. I re-arrange the pieces several times until the work strikes me as being right, or tells an unexpected narrative.
Embellished detailing and pattern-like forms reflect my experience of having a degree in clothing and textiles and working professionally as a hand knit designer. The figurative collages by Hannah Hoch, one of the originators of photomontage, and Kurt Schwitters, both collage artists early in the 20th century, and others, have been strong influences in my photo collage practice.
